But looking at how various stocks are performing today gives some hints that investors might not be quite as bullish as you'd expect. Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) and Alcoa (NYSE: AA  ) , which have lagged the Dow badly this year and have acted as a proxy for sentiment about the global economy, posted only modest gains of around 0.1%. Although a single day doesn't provide much information about long-term prospects, the first day of the month often represents a big day for money flowing into the market, so watching these stocks fail to attract investor attention signals that investors aren't convinced that the construction and commodities businesses are likely to be the strongest performers in the near future. Alcoa continues to make moves to shut down production facilities in response to poor pricing conditions, while Caterpillar's acquisition this morning of marine propulsion and control company Berg Propulsion wasn't enough to drive interest in the co nstruction equipment giant.

Shares of older, industrial companies like Alcoa (NYSE: AA  ) and Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) are leading the Dow lower this afternoon. One reason could be speculation that the Federal Reserve will taper its monthly bond purchases by the end of the year. According to The Wall Street Journal, "more than half of the 49 economists who participated in the latest ... forecasting survey" believe that it will do so.

Moving the earth for market-beating returns
Caterpillar (NYSE: CAT  ) was formed from the combination of two large American tractor manufacturers on April 15, 1925. That day, C.L. Best Tractor Company a! nd Holt C! aterpillar came together to become the modern heavy-equipment market leader so familiar to Dow watchers. This brought more than a decade of contentious litigation between the two companies to an end, combining the financially and technologically stronger Best with the more popular and widely distributed Holt. Without the merger, both might have sued each other out of existence. Together, they had the power to dominate their industry. The Antique Caterpillar Machinery Owners Club highlights the new company's immediate success:
