Hot Prefered Companies To Own For 2014

The Federal Reserve Board's surprising change of heart about reducing the pace of the five-year-long quantitative-easing program is seen by some advisers as creating new investment opportunities.

While it is difficult to argue against a positive outlook for risk assets like stocks as long as U.S. monetary policy favors a low-interest-rate environment, there is also a solid argument for a near-term rally in bonds.

“We are very likely at this point to have another bond market rebound,” said Sam Jones, president of All Season Financial Advisors Inc.

    3. QR Energy (NYSE: QRE  ) -- 11.7% yield
QR Energy is an exploration and production MLP, focused on developing mature assets in five different oil- and gas-producing regions stretching from the Permian Basin up to central Michigan. It's a small operation, with reserves of 99.1 million barrels of oil equivalent to its name.

  • [By Robert Rapier]

While I still think LRE units are undervalued, BreitBurn Energy Partners probably presents a more compelling case at present.

QR Energy (NYSE: QRE) reported a solid third quarter, with earnings before interest, taxation, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) up 13 percent to $69 million. Production was up 5 percent despite a disruption at some of it operations.

Distributable cash flow for the quarter was up 26 percent to $35 million, or $0.54 per unit, adequately covering its current distribution of $0.4875. (The partnership will convert to monthly distributions in 2014.) Based on Friday’s close, this translates into an annualized yield of 11.8 percent. Given that QRE’s solid performance came despite temporary production issues, it looks like a decent bet in the upstream MLP space for 2014.

The end result of these multiple actions has been an ongoing reduction in smoking rates over the past four decades and tougher times for U.S. tobacco producers such as Altria (NYSE: MO  ) and Reynolds American (NYSE: RAI  ) . In fact, a tough domestic sales climate was one reason Altria decided to spin off its overseas operations into Philip Morris International (NYSE: PM  ) in 2008. By separating its business, the hope was that investors would have a better understanding of the fundamental forces driving Altria and Philip Morris.

The euro traded steadily at $1.3794 at 6:30 GMT on Tuesday morning after climbing on Monday as eurozone banks prepared to pay back cheap loans to the ECB.

The common currency has had a strong end of the year as confidence returned to the region and its banks prepareed for strict asset quality reviews.

However, many see the common currency's strength dwindling in 2014 after the reviews have been conducted. At the moment, eurozone banks are repatriating funds in order to firm up their capital bases before the European Central Bank conducts its evaluations.

Also supporting the euro were comments from ECB President Mario Draghi which indicated that the bank is not worried about deflation. Draghi said that he doesn't see any immediate need to cut the region's key interest rate as there have been no further signs of deflation.

CBS"NCIS" is CBS' top rated drama. From left: Mark Harmon, guest star Colin Hanks, and Pauley Perrette. The market was loving CBS (CBS) on Tuesday, but don't be surprised if the love affair doesn't last. Shares of the broadcasting giant soared nearly 5 percent after it resolved a month-long dispute with Time Warner Cable (TWC) that had kept its channels off the air for the cable provider's 11.7 million customers. But there will be a price to pay for being unavailable to so many cable subscribers for so much of this summer, and we're not just talking about the immediate hit in the current quarter. Customers are getting tired of the games that content providers pay, and CBS is feeding the resentment as it tries to get subscribers to pay more for CBS, The CW, and lesser watched channels including Smithsonian Channel and TVGN. We don't know the terms of new carriage deal, but we know who's actually going to be paying the price: The average Time Warner Cable video customer's bill is up 8.5 percent over the past year. Is it any wonder why the pay TV industry is starting to lose customers? Audiences Are Thinning Out Industry analysts at UBS predict that cable and satellite television providers will lose 250,000 net subscribers this year. It will be the first year that the pay TV industry suffers an annual decline. CBS can argue that it's better off than its sibling Viacom (VIA), which takes in a more significant level of its television revenue from cable subscription fees. CBS has its namesake broadcast channel and more than two dozen local stations. A lot of people cutting the cord to save money will simply invest in HD antennas that they can use to access over-the-air channels including CBS. Well, it's not that easy. Local broadcast advertising was actually one of the few CBS businesses to see its profits decline in its latest quarter. The company blamed the decline on the loss of election-year political ad spending, but could it be that folks just aren't as p

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Geoff Gannon] or John Wiley and you are correct in that purchase - then the company is correct in devoting 100% of free cash flow to buybacks and 0% to dividends. There can be no question about this. The question only arises in situations where you would no longer be willing to put new money to work in the stock.

As an example, Berkshire Hathaway would be in favor of Coke using all of its free cash flow to buyback stock in 1989 because Berkshire was buying Coke then. Berkshire would not necessarily be in favor of Coke putting all its free cash flow into buybacks today because Berkshire has the opportunity to put new money to work in Coke at today's prices and instead prefers to buy Heinz, Wells Fargo, IBM, etc. The 1980s care is clear, Berkshire had to prefer buybacks because Berkshire was buying the stock itself. The 2013 situation is different. Berkshire is no longer a buyer of Coca-Cola. Berkshire is a holder of Coca-Cola.

A lot of people overlook this simple rule. If you are a buyer of a stock, you ought rationally to be in favor of that company paying no dividend and using all that cash to buy back stock. There is no good argument against this. If you are a holder of the stock, the story is different. It's complex and it may sometimes be indeterminable whether you want a dividend or a buyback.

It depends a lot on your own return potential. Historically, I've been able to earn 15% a year in the stocks I bought. So, I am a bit biased in favor of dividends over buybacks at stocks I hold but am no longer buying. I figure I can make 15% a year on my own. So unless the company can make more than 12% to 13% (due to taxes), it isn't clear that a buyback is better for me. But, again, that's based on making 15% a year annualized since 1998-1999. The stock market performance since 1998-1999 has not been as good as my personal performance. So, it's a question of whether you believe your performance will or will not be better than the market, whether your future perfo

Evan Agostini, Invision/APCBS president and CEO Leslie Moonves ranked No. 2 on a list of highest paid CEOs. LOS ANGELES -- Once again, media company CEOs are among the highest paid executives in the nation, occupying six of the top 10 earning spots, according to an Associated Press/Equilar study. Compensation experts say a variety of factors are at play, including the gain in media stocks, the intangible value of talent in a hit-or-miss business, the control of shareholder power in very few hands, and the decline of the financial sector. Stock Outperformers Outsized stock growth boosts the value of stock and option grants. Media companies' shares have rebounded strongly since the 2008 recession, mainly because advertising spending grows in tandem with a growing economy. That means higher-priced ads and higher-priced execs. Stocks of the six media companies on the list all outperformed the Standard & Poor's 500 index (^GPSC), which grew 128 percent in the five years through December 2013, according to FactSet. CBS (CBS) shares grew a whopping 699 percent in that period; Discovery Communications (DISCA) went up 539 percent; Viacom (VIA) rose 377 percent; Walt Disney (DIS) rose 250 percent; Time Warner (TWX) climbed 259 percent and Comcast (CMCSA) grew 223 percent. "If shareholders are happy they don't care how much a person makes," said Paul Dorf, managing director of consulting firm Compensation Resources. "When they complain most is when the market doesn't do well and their stock is going down the tubes." Talent Quotient Making it big in media means generating hits. And while top executives may not be hands-on with every decision, they are where the buck stops. Take Disney's animated blockbuster "Frozen," which grossed $1.2 billion at box offices worldwide. While Disney CEO Bob Iger didn't make the movie, he did orchestrate Disney's $7.4 billion acquisition of Pixar in 2006, which brought in talented executives to help reform Disney's faltering a

Advisors' Opinion:

The cable-television M&A chatter is making its rounds again, this time with Charter Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ:CHTR), Time Warner Cable Inc. (NYSE:TWC), and Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ:CMCSA) pegged as the three points of the ever-changing parties of a never-ending love triangle. The buzz is, well, was that CHTR was first in line to nab TWC. Today, however, it's starting to look like CMCSA is more seriously interested in Time Warner Cable than first thought. TWC shares jumped on the doubly-good news that it may well become the prize in a bidding war between Charter Communications and Comcast Corporation. Meanwhile, CMCSA shares have jumped (albeit not quite as firmly) on the prospect of its ownership of TWC. What's interesting - and perhaps telling - is the fact that not only have CHTR shares not soared in the wake of what would normally be viewed as good news, but Charter shares have actually stumbled heading into the possible bidding war. Might this be an omen of what's actually in store for Charter Communications?

Hot Quality Stocks To Watch For 2014

In 1988, Francis Ford Coppola released Tucker: The Man and His Dream, a film about a visionary car maker whose attempt to transform the auto industry was brought down by the Big Three. The real story was far more complex–involving allegations of fraud, an SEC investigation and even whether Tucker ever intended to really build cars–but the image of Jeff Bridges standing in front of the Tucker 48 has stuck in my head.

Fast forward and you have another visionary automaker and his Tesla (TSLA). Musk is no Tucker. There’s little doubt that he’s created a marvelous machine, even if the news about its safety rating has been, shall we say, overhyped (the L.A. Times reported that the government doesn’t test most luxury cars). The argument over its quality as an investment rages on.

In the US, we believe the key is whether the economic recovery will be self-sustaining in the absence of the excessively easy monetary policy that the US Federal Reserve (Fed) has been providing via its longstanding Treasury asset purchase program known as Quantitative Easing (QE). Can the Fed orchestrate a steady, manageable rise in interest rates? Will employment and wage growth gather strength and create a virtuous growth cycle without Fed support? And will corporate earnings continue to come through as anticipated by the steady expansion we have seen in valuation multiples? These are all unknowns, but will likely be important parts of the equation for the US market.

There were plenty of winners and losers this week, with the only game in town when it comes to satellite radio announcing a strong close to 2014 and a fading apparel retailer shutting down hundreds of stores. DISH Network (DISH) -- Winner The problem with kissing fat cable bills goodbye is giving up live sports programming, but that may no longer be an issue. DISH Network announced Sling TV, a streaming television service that offers a handful of channels -- including CNN, Disney Channel and Cartoon Network -- for $20 a month. More important for sports buffs, Sling TV also comes with ESPN, ESPN2 and the NBA-happy TNT. It remains to be seen if a streaming service of live TV gains traction. Folks on limited data plans will go through a lot of bandwidth, and speedy connections will be necessary for high quality. However, it's the boldest step by a relevant provider to break up the silly bundling of channels that leads to folks paying for a ton of content that they have no interest in watching. Sony (SNE) -- Loser The annual International CES expo is typically more about winners in the realm of consumer electronics than losers, but it's hard not to knock Sony for introducing a new Walkman. 5 Best Low Price Stocks To Own For 2014

There are certain investment-related quotes that appear when markets are at extreme levels. For instance, the classic "buy when blood is running in the streets" (Rockefeller) is a useful reminder that a vast proportion of profit is made when shares are bought (at a very low price) rather than when they are sold. Similarly, Warren Buffett's quote "you only find out who's swimming naked when the tide goes out" is a useful reminder that taking high levels of risk at the wrong time can be very costly.

So, with the S&P 500 still within touching distance of its all-time highs and the Federal Reserve beginning the tapering of its monthly asset repurchase program, could now be a good time take some risk off the table and instead reallocate capital to lower beta, higher yielding, defensive plays?

Tobacco Stocks Could Add Value
Tobacco stocksbenefit from fairly stable demand for their products. Whether the US and global economy is in a boom or a recession, people still smoke, with a switch to a lower/higher price point brand (depending on the state of the economy) more likely than giving up the habit as a result of less disposable income. Due to this, tobacco companies tend to offer lower betas and a more secure dividend payment than many of their index peers. Both of these attributes could prove vital during a market correction or bear market.

Another area that is intriguing to us is the North American energy sector which looks to have a number of interesting catalysts currently. While the energy sector is at present only a modest overweight in the portfolios, we have been encouraged by several trends taking place for a number of years. These positive developments are also having an impact that goes far beyond the energy sector itself. Many believe that the U.S. will become energy independent and possibly a net exporter of natural gas and oil (currently restricted by law) in the next decade. This opinion is based primarily on the development of new drilling techniques (i.e. horizontal drilling, and high pressure fracking) that have enabled companies to access oil and natural gas reserves in shale formations that were previously not economically viable. The ability to tap into this acreage is a game-changer in our view and is already having a tremendous impact on the economy. Employment rates in these mostly rural areas surrounding the shale basins are very high and companies thus find hiring extremely competitive. Strong labor markets tend to create strong local economies. Oil States International (OIS) has been able to capitalize on this trend by providing housing and other services to oil service workers that are in demand in the area. CST Brands (CST) operates gas stations in Texas, but it is increasingly looking to broaden its product offering beyond fuel. Rail companies like Union Pacific (UNP), Canadian Pacific (CP), Kansas City Southern (KSU) and Genesee and Wyoming (GWR) have also benefited substantially. Given that shale areas are rural and often lacking infrastructure, substantial investment must be made to support drilling and production activities. Without pipelines in place, railroads have been the primary takeaway mechanism for moving production to the various clusters of refining capacity around the United States. In order to serve this demand, massive investment in railcars has been nee

The Chinese have made it clear they like to build their own dominant companies in key industries, like the Internet for instance. For this reason, hedge fund manager John Burbank of Passport Capital has major investments in Baidu (BIDU), Qihoo 360 (QIHU), which specializes in Internet security, search, and mobile apps, and SouFun (SFUN) which he calls the “Zillow of China.”

Qihoo 360 (NYSE: QIHU  ) changed the search landscape when it moved to offer an in-house solution last summer. A T.H. Capital report shows Qihoo 360 commanding nearly 15% of the market. Baidu is still the undisputed top dog with 70% of the market, but it feels vulnerable for the first time since Google (NASDAQ: GOOG  ) decided to stage a partial retreat out of the world's most populous nation a couple of years ago.
