Top 10 Warren Buffett Stocks To Watch For 2014

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- At Stockpickr, we track daily portfolios of stocks that are the biggest percentage gainers and the biggest percentage losers.

>>Warren Buffett's Top 25 Stocks for 2014

Stocks that are making large moves like these are favorites among short-term traders because they can jump into these names and try to capture some of that massive volatility. Stocks that are making big-percentage moves either up or down are usually in play because their sector is becoming attractive or they have a major fundamental catalyst such as a recent earnings release. Sometimes stocks making big moves have been hit with an analyst upgrade or an analyst downgrade.

Regardless of the reason behind it, when a stock makes a large-percentage move, it is often just the start of a new major trend -- a trend that can lead to huge profits. If you time your trade correctly, combining technical indicators with fundamental trends, discipline and sound money management, you will be well on your way to investment success.

  • [By Jack Kramer and Nick Martell] What's the best way to share your enthusiasm for stocks reaching new records? "Primp" your dog to look like a panda. (It's the cool thing to do in China right now, according to the New York Post. Seriously.) The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) gained 20 points Tuesday, touching a new all-time high midday.
    1. Cosmetics giant Elizabeth Arden delivers ugly earnings
It's too bad you can't put some foundation and blush on a corporate earnings report to make it look better. That's what the cosmetics chemists over at makeup giant Elizabeth Arden (NASDAQ: RDEN  ) wish they had done after the stock fell 22.8% Tuesday following its unattractive earnings report -- revenue fell 20% last quarter to $210.8 million, well below the $256.9 million Wall Street expected.

Unlike everyone's favorite model, Heidi Klum, Elizabeth Arden struggled all across Planet Earth to kick off 2014. In North America, sales fell 23% as the company launched fewer fragrances than usual and dealt with the brutal winter weather deterring beauty-seeking consumers. And despite Arden's presence in 120 countries worldwide, international sales fell 16% after management "strategically decides" to reduce its shipments to avoid giving out brand-hurting discounts at the end of the season.

The takeaway is that Elizabeth Arden is trying to get picked up like it's on a corporate date. Just last month, Household Health & Care announced that it was interested in purchasing Arden. So during the earnings report, the company tried to please investors by mentioning that it's working with Goldman Sachs, as if the bank is a matchmaker, to explore "strategic options" for its future.

It was a caffeine surge for Keurig Green Mountain (NASDAQ: GMCR  ) after soda giant Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO  ) announced Tuesday it will buy millions more share

Today's beverage companies are not your mom and dad's soda pop as diversification and global branding have created a wave of products and opened doors to new markets across the global village. Of course, Coca-Cola (NYSE: KO  ) remains a leader, but upstarts like Keurig Green Mountain (NASDAQ: GMCR  ) and SodaStream (NASDAQ: SODA  ) offer more choices to consumers and investors.

Green Mountain Coffee Roasters brings the specialty coffee and related beverage trend home to eager consumers. The stock is now recovering from recent negative press and looks to continue its rip higher. Over the last four quarters, the company has seen rising earnings and revenue figures that have maintained investors excited about the stock. Relative to its peers and sector, Green Mountain Coffee Roasters has been a year-to-date performance leader. Look for Green Mountain Coffee Roasters to OUTPERFORM.

Small cap mining stocks Discovery Minerals Ltd (OTCMKTS: DSCR), Zinco Do Brasil Inc (OTCMKTS: ZNBR) and Amalgamated Gold and Silver Inc (OTCMKTS: BCHS) have been getting some extra attention lately as one stock surged last Friday while the other two are or have been in the past, the subject of paid promotions. It goes without saying though that small cap mining stocks tend to be riskier than your average stock. But do these three small cap mining stocks have what it takes to produce a mother lode for investors? Here is a deeper dig into all three:

Top 10 Warren Buffett Stocks To Watch For 2014: HCP Inc. (HCP)

HCP, Inc. is an independent hybrid real estate investment trust. The fund invests in real estate markets of the United States. It primarily invests in properties serving the healthcare industry including sectors of healthcare such as senior housing, life science, medical office, hospital and skilled nursing. HCP, Inc. was formed in 1985 and is based in Long Beach, California with additional office in Nashville and San Francisco.

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Ben Levisohn]

My vote for the strangest drop of the week goes to HCP (HCP). The healthcare real-estate investment trust fell 6% to $39.05 after it fired its CEO without warning and insisted there was nothing behind it except desire for a different management style. Investors were not enthused.

  • [By Jonas Elmerraji]

HCP (HCP) is a healthcare REIT that owns hospitals, medical office buildings, and senior housing/nursing facilities. That niche exposure makes HCP more attractive than your typical trust – especially as aging baby boomers ramp up their healthcare and senior living needs. Right now, HCP pays out a hefty 4.6% dividend yield.

Because HCP is the landlord, not the service provider, it's able to take advantage of the increased demand for healthcare services without being subjected to regulatory headwinds. Even if legislation squeezed margins for hospitals, for instance, it doesn't change the fact that those facilities still need physical locations.

Like most commercial operators, HCP leases properties on a triple-net basis. That means that the tenant, not HCP, is on the hook for real estate taxes, insurance, and maintenance costs. That means that HCP just collects a regular, predictable rent check from its tenants, along with a pre-set price bump each year for inflation. For income investors, that's a winning combination.

However, Fool biotech expert Brian Orelli points out one big caveat: Once sequencing companies make these tests accessible, margins may collapse beyond the ability of volume sales to make up the difference. At least Illumina (and Life Tech) are in the driver's seat on margins, as it's unlikely that lesser-funded sequencing competitors Affymetrix (NASDAQ: AFFX  ) and Pacific Biosciences (NASDAQ: PACB  ) can muster the resources to push out sequencing at cost-effective scale before their peers.

Back on February 4th, I wrote an article regarding another antibiotic stock named Trius Therapeutics (TSRX). It was trading at $5.00 per share at the time, and I put a price per share prediction of $13.00. I also stated it was a takeover target. Yesterday, Cubist Pharmaceuticals bought Trius Therapeutics for $13.50 a share. You can read that article here.
