Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Sue Chang and Saumya Vaishampayan]

Expedia Inc. (EXPE) shares skyrocketed 15%. The online travel agency reported fourth-quarter adjusted earnings of 92 cents a share, beating expectations. Its competitor TripAdvisor Inc. (TRIP) climbed 10% and Priceline.com Inc. (PCLN) added 4.8%.

  • [By Alexis Xydias]

TripAdvisor Inc. (TRIP)s price-earnings ratio surged 85 percent as profit rose 4.8 percent in 2012 and is projected to increase 11 percent in 2013, according to Bloomberg data. Stephen Kaufer, chief executive officer of the Newton, Massachusetts-based online travel-recommendation service, said on Aug. 14 hes not seeing a lot of positive stuff in the third quarter as the summer has been bumpier and traffic is weaker than expected.

  • [By Alex Planes]

Earnings season was very good to TripAdvisor (NASDAQ: TRIP  ) , which rose 16.3% today on better-than-expected advertising revenue. The online travel specialist has now gained 60% in 2013, and with double-digit growth in quarterly sales (up 25% year-over-year), and earnings (up 27% on an adjusted basis and 24% under GAAP rules), it's easy to see why. Full-year revenue growth is still expected to come in somewhere in the "low 20s" range, as in 20%. TripAdvisor has been trying to tra! nsition i! nto a more search-centric business model, so posting big beats on its earnings in spite of these transitional efforts points toward the potential for bigger gains further on.
